The Black Cat Cafe on Montgomery
Street became home in the 1950's
to a Gay drag revue starring Jose
Sarria. Sarria was born in San
Francisco and performed each
Sunday afternoon for fifteen years
to full houses of 250 or more, using
his role as Madame Butterfly to
sermonize about homosexual rights
and leading a sing-along of “God
Save the Nelly Queens..."

When it finally closed in 1963, The
Black Cat had broken the barriers
that prevented overtly Gay bars
from existing freely.

A 1951 California Supreme Court
decision banned the closing down
of a bar simply because
homosexuals were the usual
customers.

Manuel Castells convincingly
argues in
The Grassroots and the
City
that The Black Cat had also
established an important cultural
precedent for the Gay community:
fun and humor.

As the community developed,
feasts, celebrations, street parties,
public and private bars, and
bathhouses and sex clubs, became
the important forms of cultural
expression and sociability, which in
turn strongly influenced other
communities in San Francisco and
beyond.

The men who organize Sonoma County’s monthly men’s dining out evening are planning an overnight
camping trip to Angel Island the weekend of Sept 13-14.

They have reserved a group campsite that holds up to 20 people. It is located near a beach on the
west side of the island with views of the Golden Gate Bridge. The campsite is less than a mile from the
ferry landing, and most of that distance is a paved road. For guys who don't want to pack in their gear,
it's possible to take a garden cart and pull it along with gear piled in it. Bicycles are allowed on the
island and segways can be rented there as well.

The campsite is pretty cheap and will be $2 a person. The round-trip ferry ride is $13.00. There are
different parking options in Tiburon. Some are free, and some are paid. For more info go to www.
angelislandferry.com. If you are interested in going, please let Wayne or Joe  know and they wil  add
you to the list. Contact Wayne at gyrfalcon@sbcglobal.net or Joe at  amato@sonic.net

The eQuality Scholarship Collaborative honors and
encourages northern and central California students
for their service to the lesbian, gay, bisexual,
transgender community by providing scholarships
for post-secondary education at approved
institutions. In 2008, the Collaborative awarded
$55,000 to 11 courageous students. In addition to
its own scholarships, the Collaborative administers
two other scholarships:
•        $5000 scholarships for students enrolled or
accepted for enrollment in an accredited nursing
program in California. This scholarship is funded by
The Kaiser Permanente Northern California Fund for
Health Education. The four recipients are selected by
KP Pride.
•        A $2000 scholarship for a medical student
attending school in California or a California resident
attending medical school elsewhere in the U.S. This
scholarship is funded by The Permanente Medical
Group. The recipient is selected by KP Pride.
The Collaborative is the joint effort of a group of
individuals and organizations based in the San
Francisco Bay Area.  It began in 1989 as a
scholarship program by Pacific Gas and Electric
Company's lesbian and gay employee association,
now PG&E PrideNetwork. The following year,
the Bay Area Network of Gay and Lesbian Educators -
now Ally Action - joined the effort. Additional
members have joined the Collaborative over the
years, and more are always welcome. The
Collaborative is an all-volunteer effort, keeping
administrative costs low.

"Holding Trevor" is the next movie in the Face to Face
Film Series, August 21, at 7:15 PM at Santa Rosa's Rialto
Cinemas,
551 Summerfield Road, Admission is $9.50

Everybody's looking for something. This much is true.
And Trevor Holden (Brent Gorski) is desperately looking
for himself in all the wrong places... Or maybe just in all
the wrong people. It's pretty safe to say that he won't find
enlightenment in his strung-out boyfriend Darrell. And
despite the well-meaning advice offered by his sexually
pervasive best friend and his self-righteous roommate
Andie, Trevor still seems to come up short. Almost ready
to throw in the towel, Trevor meets the ever so charming
Ephram. Simply being everything that Darrell is not wins
Ephram a number of points up-front.

Trevor's relationship with Ephram progresses rather
quickly, and it starts to put a strain on his friendships
with Jake and Andie, both of whom feel Trevor could
stand to be a little more in tune with their feelings.

Holding Trevor is a sometimes funny, sometimes
scathing inspection of a group of friends and lovers that
offers a prescient and biting analysis of men and women
struggling to make sense of their lives and relationships,
all the while reaching every which way but into their own
hearts to do so. Starring writer Brent Gorski and
singer/songwriter Jay Brannan (Shortbus). Directed by
Rosser Goodman (Daddy-O, Life's a Butch!, Wet Dress).

Sometimes, a step in the right direction means forging a
whole new path. Holding Trevor is continually poignant,
relentlessly self-deprecating, and just the type of
cerebral dark comedy that can speak directly to the
twenty-somethings of today while letting other
generations in on the joke.

As we all know, there isn’t a Gay bar in Santa Rosa, but one
bar seems to be taking on the mantle – de facto and part time
– and that is
Upper Fourth, the trendy cocktail lounge on the
East side
of Old Courthouse Square in Santa Rosa.

Tuesday nights seem to be the night to show up if you’re
a Gay man looking for entertainment and sociability. Reports
are Tuesdays are very busy, and there is usually a small jazz
combo playing.
